Hello. Hello everyone, and welcome back to Email Einstein podcast by Flowium. We are email marketers at an agency called Flowium and we are very passionate about email marketing. And because we love what we do, we want to share our insights with you. And today I’m joined by my colleague, Amanda. Amanda is a seasoned podcast guest already. Guys, you probably know Amanda, so Amanda requires no introduction. But for those of you who haven’t met Amanda, we work together. Amanda is the senior email marketing specialist here at Flowium. That’s why I’m really excited to have her on the podcast today. Just because she has like so many good like, insights about holidays, about Black Friday, Cyber Monday, December campaigns full of ideas, full of cool inspirations, if we can say that. So Amanda, I’m so happy. I’m so happy you’re here.

Amanda: 1:36

Yeah, I’m so happy to be here. I’m so excited and I’m like really excited to be back. And yeah, no, this, it’s really like I’m so happy with that great introduction. You always hype me up so much. Yay.

Vira: 1:48

So full disclosure, it’s November 17th when we are recording this podcast, but by the time you guys will hear it, probably most of you will have Christmas trees up. Amanda, do you have your Christmas tree up yet or not?

Amanda: 2:02

So sad story is I just moved so I have a really small space and I cannot find anywhere to put it. But I’m thinking of shifting my entire office around and putting it in the corner maybe. But yeah, I was really excited. I just got a brand new artificial Cryst Christmas tree and it’s pre lit and I’m a little disappointed but I think I’m gonna make something work because my son’s been asking me a lot about it, so.

Vira: 2:27

Oh yeah, you should definitely, you should definitely do something. Well, I already have my Christmas tree up and I know that people in states there’s kinda like two groups of people. People who put the Christmas tree before Black Friday and after Black Friday. Well, in Canada it’s different. We don’t have any rules. You can put up your Christmas tree whenever you want. Our Black Friday or our Thanksgiving is in Oct. Like ending of October. And we just need something to, you know, to look forward to.

Amanda: 2:56

I know that it was in October.

Vira: 2:58

Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. Like second week of October. It’s very, like, pretty and the weather is so beautiful. It’s. It’s a really nice time to have the Thanksgiving. Yeah.

Amanda: 3:09

Oh, yeah. I love that because I’m always ready for the holidays. So I think right over straight to Thanksgiving. I’m not complaining about that at all.

Vira: 3:18

Yeah. And the brands also started their promotions. They’re like holiday promotions, like super early this year. I feel like I noticed that right as soon as like Halloween hits, like the day after Halloween, everything turns from like orangey black to like red, red and green.

Amanda: 3:35

Yeah, no, we’ve definitely been doing some tiered sales, just getting ready for Black Friday Cyber Monday and just having those tied in. And we started in October too, for a lot of brands. So that’s interesting. This year for sure.

Vira: 3:47

Yeah, yeah, that’s for sure. Well, you guys, you, like, by the time you will be listening to this podcast, the Black Friday will probably be over or like almost over your Black Friday Cyber Monday sales and you are on that, like, finishing line. You can finally be free and have time to relax. Well, not really because while the busy marketing, like the busiest part of the season is probably like done the first day of November, your goal after the sale is still to convert those like one time Black Friday buyers into repeat customers. And also your goal is to keep the revenue flowing and especially it’s hard since probably like this year it might be a bit different because of the recession and the prices are going up for everything. So this year you’ll have to be extra creative to bring those people back to your website, back to your store. But we have so many cool ideas that you guys can use for December. And definitely December is the sprint to the holidays. There are Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa. There are different, like back to back fun holidays. Also there is like a gingerbread house day on December 12th, salesperson appreciation day on December 4th. Have an ugly sweater office party on December 18th. There’s like so many things celebrate. And Amanda, let’s start with like the themes for the months. What are the big sort of like topics for the months of December?

Amanda: 5:31

All right, so the ongoing themes of the month of December will start with gift giving, of course. And so according to the latest data from the National Retail Federation, American consumers spend an average of about$997 on gifts for the holidays.

Vira: 5:47

That’s insane.

Amanda: 5:48

I know. And that’s approximately the same as the median of pre tax of the weekly SAL of$1,000. So they’re really.

Vira: 5:56

That sounds accurate actually now when I think about it, maybe I’m not in like the 900s yet, but I feel like when you have kids, this number is like growing, getting higher. Right.

Amanda: 6:09

I also think it’s when you, you know, you can do all your last minute shopping kind of in one go and it ends up adding up so fast. And so there’s some people that are really smart and they, they do it little by little throughout the year. But people like myself, I definitely just do one week trip and spend a ton of money. So this sounds about accurate for me.

Vira: 6:29

Yeah, that’s true for me as well.

Amanda: 6:32

So we all know that getting gifts is easier than coming up with gift ideas. So your subscribers will thank you if you send them an email with awesome gift ideas. And so this can be something for their loved ones for the holiday season. And of course, you know, we can even offer some discounts just for extra motivation. So we see brands doing gift guides. We want to definitely include those in our calendar. And so you could do it like gifts by category. So an example is Wool and the Gang, a brand who is selling knitting kits. And they’re organized by level of skill. So you have.

Vira: 7:05

Oh, that’s pretty cool.

Amanda: 7:07

Yeah, right. You have beginner, easy, intermediate. And so I think that’s a great starting point, especially if you know who you’re gifting it for. So that’s really fun. And then you can also do gifts by a type of person. And so you could do like the hard worker, the couch potato for the fun family. And that gives a good like odd, like you know, just a good member to like think about, okay, which family members like this, which ones like that and just get, get your subscribers being creative and inspired. And then you can also do gifts by price. So since a lot of your prospects likely search for gifts with a budget in mind, organizing a holiday gift guide according to the price can improve your visitors browsing experience and help them easily find what they’re looking for. And so what, like what? First thing that comes to my mind is those Secret Santa parties or White Elephant. So you know, you can have like a price range at least for the group. And this is a great way to categorize that and like give your subscribers ease by searching for those specific gifts.

Vira: 8:03

Yeah, that’s, that’s super cool. And I do make a lot of those like gift guides for our clients internally as well. And every time we send them, they perform so well. I don’t know what it is about the gift guides. Probably just like you said, that convenience right. Of the experience when you group the products for your customers. But I love them. I’m like obsessed with Sephora gift guides like every year. I’m like waiting for their holiday gift guides. And also I love when brands are doing this like gift guides by price because I know that this might be a good, like a stocking stuffer or this can be a good gift for my like best friend when I want to spend a bit of more like money on it. So that’s, that’s a pretty cool idea, Amanda.

Amanda: 8:49

Yeah. No, and even like have you, I don’t know if you’ve been seeing those gift bundles as well. So like you could do offers and I think that’s super inspiring and just get your ideas flowing when you’re looking for a gift for someone. Because whenever something’s bundled together, it always makes this gift. I’ve done that my whole life. And so seeing it in email marketing is just, it’s amazing.

Vira: 9:10

Yeah. Yeah. And we also kind of when we promote the bundles and a lot of my clients, they do sell products and bundles as well, we say something like, hey, you can give it as a gift, as a bundle or you can have like five different stocking stuffers from this bundle. So buy it as a bundle and save money. And you, you can either give it as a single gift or give it to like five different people. You know what I mean? So that’s like super convenient. Yeah. I love the bundles. I love the product recommendations. So, so help helpful, especially around the holidays.

Amanda: 9:43

Yeah, 100%. You could also even gift by product category. And so a brand called Need Supply co framed their holiday gift guide around Maslow’s hierarchy of needs.

Vira: 9:54

That’s so cute.

Amanda: 9:55

Yeah. You know, and I, I’m trying to remember the movie I remember this from. I think it’s with Myth, but he talks about this in marketing where most people will act and purchase off of these basic needs such as love, safety, food and self actualization. I just want to remember the film. I’m going to research this later, but I just remember that being a huge point in the movie and it’s so true. And I think this is a great way to dedicate each email for that type of theme when gift giving.

Vira: 10:24

Yeah, yeah, for sure. And I even noticed like I’m subscribed to like a lot of fashion brands or like people or brands that I shop, shop from and most of the time I shop for like female products. Right. Like female fashion stuff like T shirts and jeans and stuff like that. But around the holidays they also introduce the other product categories to me just because it’s a time when you are shopping for like other people as well. So once in a while I’m gonna get a gift guide for like a boyfriend or a husband or like here is what your male friend want to see in their Christmas stocking and stuff like that, which I think is also really cool. That’s definitely your. The time of year when you can educate customers on everything that you have on your websites, not just something that they’ve purchased in the past. Yeah, that’s a cool.

Amanda: 11:12

Yeah, I think cross selling for sure is a huge focus on especially during this time of year and not your typical cross sell when they’re shopping for themselves. So you really have to think outside the box. So I totally agree with you there.

Vira: 11:24

Yeah, you totally need to understand who your customers are, like what sort of like lifestyle they have, who they might have as a partner or as a friend. It always comes down to understanding who your people are. Yeah. The other themes for December are. Well, there are like a ton of different holidays in December as well. So there’s Hanukkah. If you have a big Jewish group of people who are serving, it’s definitely like a holiday to mention that’s also human. Human Rights Week is also celebrated in December. This is very random, but it is celebrated in December. National Hand Washing Awareness Week. This is like the most random one. Hand washing December. I don’t know.

Amanda: 12:11

I wish it would be more than a week. I wish it would be forever a year.

Vira: 12:16

Year awareness 24, seven.

Amanda: 12:18

Every day for sure.

Vira: 12:20

Yeah. Well, December 4th is also a National Sock day, which is a very random holiday, but it’s a day to celebrate those rarest of socks that manage to like stick together and maybe more in. Those socks lost their significant others in the wash over the years because I mean it happens all the time to me. Like I put two socks into the washer and dryer and then I get one back. I don’t know. It’s like a socks tax almost. Yeah, no, but there’s like a lot of fun things you can do on National Socks Day if you are selling socks. Obviously it’s like a no brainer for you. But also socks is kind of like a cool Christmas gift. I know when you’re a kid it’s like a lame Christmas gift that you don’t want to get from Santa. But when you’re getting older you get to appreciate a Good pair of like cozy, good quality socks. I don’t know. There’s something.

Amanda: 13:15

I am always looking for socks. I’m always buying them and always like you said, we’re always losing the other off. Like the other. Yes and no. I, when I was a kid I would always steal my siblings socks because I would always lose them. So this is a great gift, especially even for teenagers, I think.

Vira: 13:30

Yeah. The only pair of socks that I was like really excited to get as a kid was those socks with like separate, separate toes, you know.

Amanda: 13:38

Oh yeah, yeah.

Vira: 13:39

They looked so, they looked so weird like, and they weren’t even that comfortable, you know.

Amanda: 13:45

I didn’t like them. I don’t like things going in between my toes. It’s so awkward and it looks weird too.

Vira: 13:50

I know, but like they were. And they were like so cool. So popular. You, you could wear them with sandals. I’m like against socks plus sandals. I’m not, not that kind of person usually. But like back in like early 2000s, that was cool.

Amanda: 14:07

There was a lot of fun things in the early 2000s.

Vira: 14:09

Oh gosh.

Amanda: 14:10

That’s a whole nother episode.

Vira: 14:11

I think that’s a whole nother episode, that’s for sure. Yeah. Well, the, the second Monday of December is called the Green Monday. And this usually isn’t a date dedicated to environment. And I have no idea what it, why it’s called green, but usually it marks that like almost like a 10 to 12 days until Christmas mark. And usually people realize that they only have like 10 to shop for like 10 days before the Christmas. So they have to shop ASAP. Especially with all of the shipping delays and everything. You may use that day as sort of like a last day to shop for Christmas to, for us to deliver it in time. You can do it later as well. But yeah, just like this year the entire delivery and shipping can be a bit different from like previous years. But yeah, Green Monday. Green Monday. Definitely put it on your.

Amanda: 15:11

I totally agree with having those marking dates of when the best time to order is because a lot of people will get that urgent like, oh, I need to do this now, especially if I want it in time for Christmas. So it’s a huge, huge deal I think to make those all right.

Vira: 15:26

Yeah, totally.

Amanda: 15:27

Yeah. And then so we also have, in December we have National Free Shipping Day. So you can imagine how this is for E commerce brands.

Vira: 15:35

It is.

Amanda: 15:36

On this day, thousands of online retailers, both large and small offer free shipping and guarantee your items by Christmas eve. And in 2022, free shipping day will be on Wednesday, December 14th. So I think definitely, yeah, you wanted, I think, you know, it’s good to give like even a reminder the day before and then also the day of and just to get shoppers prepared to, you know, take advantage of that free shipping.

Vira: 16:00

And I don’t know what, what it is about like free shipping, but people love it, like absolutely love it. I have this client who always offers free shipping. That’s like a part of the deal. You like purchase the mascara or purchase like a serum or something and a free shipping. Yet like on December 14th last year or December 16th or whatever it was, we like specifically like highlighted this, the fact that they always, that they got a free shipping and people went crazy.

Amanda: 16:27

Yeah, because I was going to say I have a client where we have a free shipping banner like in every email we send. It’s over like an email. But sometimes it’s just that one dedicated reminder email that makes everybody react to it. You know, you make the whole campaign about the free shipping and they perform so well. Even though, like they always offer it. Whenever you just send that real like good reminder, people respond to it and they get excited. They think, you know, they’re getting a great deal. And I think it’s really helpful.

Vira: 16:56

Totally. And if you think about it like a shipping cost is one of the main reasons why people abandon their card as well. I, I read this somewhere and that’s like funny because I mean sometimes I spend like hundreds of dollars or like I put hundreds of dollars worth of products in the card, but then I checkout page and they’re like, okay, pay five bucks for the shipping. I’m like, okay, I’m done. Yeah, it’s so weird, but like there’s something about free shipping that people are going crazy for.

Amanda: 17:29

Yeah, it’s hilarious. I think it’s just something like a, it’s an afterthought. They’re not expecting this and they’re like, hey, I didn’t sign up for this. But yeah, definitely. Great reminder there. And then of course we have Christmas Eve and Christmas day, which is December 24th and 25th. And so a great idea, idea for a campaign to send out is those last minute virtual gift cards. So do not take any time. You know, it’s automatic in your inbox. And so a great brand that’s doing this is Mergeries, the Gift that Never Expires campaign. And so they basically, what they say is the gift that never expires, it is always the right fit. Keep yourself, keep it for yourself or forward it to a friend and so I think this is just, it may seem simple but I think that there is a huge conversion power lying within this. So you know, just bringing it down to the timing, the this email is truly what makes it work. So if you know it’s not just any other Christmas email where you save last minute shoppers like you are really like this is last, last call and so you know, they could forward it over to their friend to use and you know, it just makes things a lot easier and they can get it immediately without having to worry about delays in shipping or anything like that.

Vira: 18:41

Yeah, yeah, that’s so cool. And I know. So I’m pretty sure in Shopify they have this like built in functionality for like a gift, gift cards or something. But there are also like a lot of really cool third party apps that you can install on your Shopify or on your WooCommerce or whatever and definitely do that before the holidays. We see like a big spike from those like last minute holiday shoppers and the revenue comes from like gift cards and like the gift cards from. For like the weirdest stuff I have the client who’s selling shocks for cars and like last year we’ve sent that campaign and people did buy like a lot of like a big portion of that revenue came from gift cards. And like do I want to get a gift card for like a car shock? I don’t know. Yeah, I’m sure there are people who would love that. I’m sure there are people who would like love, love that as a gift.

Amanda: 19:40

Yeah, no, and I think sometimes, you know, people tend to forget about gift cards and how like essential they can be when trying to find, push, you know, your audience to convert or make that last minute sale. And so you know, I just think it’s really great because I’ve seen those perform so well. Especially like the closer to the due date of needing to send that gift though you put the heat on and it really does help that sense of urgency and making them want to complete their purchase.

Vira: 20:33

And when we talking about the gift cards that’s a bit of a different angle. But my client that we just started working with, they were like every year we’re trying to have like some promotions in December, some like big promotions promotion so people can spend their like Visa or MasterCard gift cards that they got from like work on like our website because apparently that’s a thing. And very often people at work, they, they get like, they get this gift cards from work and they want to spend them somewhere. So that’s why My client wants to have like extra campaigns in December to encourage people to spend their gift cards on. On the website.

Amanda: 21:16

Yeah, yeah, no, I think that’s a great idea. And you know, just some. Just some more ideas just to get in the Christmas spirit and Christmas mood, I think, you know, if you are a master of coffee and love Christmas, this example will show you how to combine them effectively. So Marion Bright has this cute little poem and I’m going to read it to you. So with a touch of. And I try. Okay, I’m gonna try to read it like nicely, but I. I’m not that good at reading poems. But here we go. With a touch of sp. Hint of shine. Click your. Click your Britain heels. It’s party time. Pick your brightest Kensington made of Rainbow hues. Here’s 10% off Christmas from Kurt Greger or Kurt Gager to you.

Vira: 21:56

Aww. That’s so cute.

Amanda: 21:57

I love that. It’s just. Yeah, it’s such a cute little. It’s. It reminds me of like a. Like a card. You know, you would get like a Christmas card.

Vira: 22:04

And like the night before Christmas. Right. That little Christmas coin. Yeah.

Amanda: 22:09

Has the same vibe, definitely. I think it’s so cute and it gets a subscribers into the holiday mood and, you know, boost sales.

Vira: 22:16

Sales.

Amanda: 22:16

And of course you definitely want to include that Clear Bright cta so that way your subscribers will know where to click, go into the store and also feel entertained at the same time. So I think that’s just such a good idea for Christmas.

Vira: 22:28

I think last year we’ve done something like this for one of our clients for the pet brand that we work with and our copywriters. Irina, shout out to you, Irina, if you’re listening to us. She’s amazing with creating this like, little. With this little poems and everything. Yeah. Was a successful test.

Amanda: 22:47

Definitely. I’ve seen some of her poem writing. Like, I. She’s referenced poems and I’m like, that is so smart. I love that. Yeah. I get excited whenever I see Irina’s copy come back. I’m like, oh, when did she come up with this time?

Vira: 22:58

I warned her to write a book for me one day.

Amanda: 23:01

Oh, my gosh.

Vira: 23:01

Even a children’s book, Like a children’s book. It would be perfect for like, children.

Amanda: 23:06

I would love that.

Vira: 23:07

I love her style, the way she writes. Well, anyways, Irina, if you’re listening to this, we love you. Cool. Yeah, I mean, Christmas is a big time and I’ve seen like a lot of brands. They are moving from that, like Christmas language more to like, more Inclusive language, you know, to like people. Because like different people are accelerating different things in December. So they say something like more like towards happy holidays and stuff like that. But yeah, I mean it’s a definite time to celebrate December. Whatever. Whatever you’re celebrating. Yeah, cool. Well, December 29th and guys, there are like a ton of different, like other holidays that we mentioned the beginning of the, of the podcast that you can definitely create the content for, but since we are very limited in time, we’ll talk about the main ones. So December 29th is the TikTok day and no, it’s not the day to honor the social media platform TikTok. TikTok Day is basically the day to remind yourself that’s almost like an end of the year. So if you have some like unfinished business or if you have some goals that you still want to finish this year, today is the day or like now is the time. And also it’s a day to look back at what you achieved and see if you can maybe like share some like accomplishments with your audience as well. So you can use the day to make some sort of like a wrap up of the year. A lot of brands are doing that, that like, for example, every year I’m like really looking forward to those like year in review emails from different platforms. Like I’m obsessed with what Spotify is doing. Have you received those emails like last year, Amanda? Like a year in review emails from Spotify?

Amanda: 24:51

Yeah, I remember this actually. People were sharing it on their Instagram and everybody. Yeah, that was really cool and I love that that was such a smart move for Spotify because so many people signed up and were sharing their playlists and. Yeah, exactly. That was a really cool campaign. I love that.

Vira: 25:08

So it basically showed you like how many minutes of music you listened to last year. What was your most popular genre? What was your most popular song that you listened to? A lot. My list was pretty embarrassing. I had a lot of Disney songs there. So I’m like, I’m like guilty of a good Disney sing along. But, but such a cool idea, you know that just to give your customers a year in review and if you have the resources to like personalize it and I don’t know how Shopify have done it, probably like a lot of coding went into that email because you could probably you could like receive that like customized email for different people. But I mean it doesn’t have to be as advanced. Maybe you can just like send a thank you note to people who have purchased something from you. Maybe you can just like Wish them happy New Year. Maybe you can do the recap of the most popular like social media posts from this year or maybe you can talk about your number one product that was your hero product this year. Just like give some good look on the last year. And it’s December 29th. TikTok Day is definitely the day to reflect. And of course New Year’s Eve, December 31, the last day of the year. It’s usually celebrated with like big social gathering, rings, watching fireworks. It’s also actually the time to show off your fanciest party outfit. So if you guys are in fashion, if your brand is in fashion and you are selling like some cute outfits or any like supplies or products to help them prepare for the New Year’s parties, maybe it’s a good idea to start a bit earlier like weeks before New Year’s. Yeah, so that’s, that’s always a good idea. But a lot of businesses send New Year’s wishes to their customers, reflect on the past year there and they also like run special promotions especially like during that last few days of the year. So yeah Amanda, what type of like content do you usually like receive around the holidays around like new year time?

Amanda: 27:23

Yeah, no, like along with all of that wrapping up for the year, we also do a lot of thank yous from the brand itself and I’ve seen a few brands do this where you. They actually show like team photos thank you from our CEO and it gives like subscribers is a great opportunity to feel connected and know you know who’s sending these emails like let me get in touch with this brand and learn more. And I think it’s just a great personal touch to just saying thank you and wrapping up the year. I have my brands doing that that I work with and I think it’s super effective. People love that sense of community and connection especially at the end of the year when they’re wrapping up.

Vira: 27:58

So yeah, yeah for sure. And you of course you can always do a big sale. People love sale and we usually frame it as like the last sale of the year, like a post Christmas clearance sale or something like that. But it doesn’t have to be a sale. For example, like last year this brand, this brand, what was their name? I think it was Holden or something. They like literally just send this cute email from the team just like you Amanda said it was like a happy new Year. They said this like I’m going to read it actually from city to summit and all the lands in between. We would like to take a moment to say thank you for your support. We look forward to sharing our latest screen creations with you in the coming years. Cheers from all of us here at Holden. It’s simple, it’s nice. They’ve added some like pictures, some like user generated content pictures of the team. It wasn’t like overly promotional and I assume they would send it probably like to people who have purchased from them like over the last year because like you are thanking them for the support of the brand. Right. So I think it’s a great, it’s a great idea to like to wish them happy New Year, to thank them for being with you this year and just like to show that human face of the brand. Right, right. When you’re like combining the copy with something like with compelling visuals and like putting the human face on the brand, that’s pretty much all you need. Start building that relationship with the customer.

Amanda: 29:30

Yeah. And I think even just recapping like social like UGC, like from like Instagram or even TikTok, anything like that, I think just you know, recapping all of your subscribers who participated as a group and sent you know, fun socials over the years I think year. Yeah, that’s definitely a huge one too. So definitely is there for the end of the year.

Vira: 29:51

Totally, totally. So guys, here you have it. Some ideas for December 2022. We’re almost there. This crazy year is almost over and as I mentioned there are like a lot of cute little holidays like baked Cookies Day on December 18th or like Boxing Day on December 26th. And by the way it has nothing to do with like a box box like a sport. It’s like a day. I don’t know you guys in, in the States you probably don’t celebrate Boxing Day but for us it’s like the biggest sale of the year. It’s like as big as Black Friday. It’s like the day after Christmas when this malls are like selling out their like Christmas inventory and everything. So they’re like boxing everything into the boxes.

Amanda: 30:35

No, I’ve never. Yeah, I haven’t seen that out here too much in the States. That’s interesting. There’s all this, that’s a Canadian UK something.

It’s actually UK thing I think. But since we’re like. So we’re like a cousin of uk, right? So it’s pretty much, it’s pretty much how we, how we do things. So a few years ago the Black Friday wasn’t even a thing. Wasn’t like a big thing. The Boxing Day was the biggest promotion of the year. Now it’s changing, obviously. But yeah, December 20th, go Caroling Day. December 21st, first day of winter. Like official. But I don’t know and it doesn’t sound right because we had snow already. So definitely the day to celebrate all things winter. December 14th, rose chestnut day. December 9th, Christmas card day. There are like so many fun things you can do around the holidays in December. And yeah, we, we, we hope you guys enjoyed it on our podcast. And by the way, we will link the holiday calendar in the description box.
